GUWAHATI, June 11: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting with the Khatara Satra Management Committee on Wednesday to address key issues faced by the historic Satra.
The discussions took place during his visit to the 16th-century institution in Darrang district, founded in 1568 by Lechakonia Sri Sri Gobinda Ata, a prominent figure in Assam’s Neo-Vaishnavite tradition. The According to an official statement, chief minister –– who offered prayers at the Satra –– underscored the importance of preserving spiritual heritage and fulfilling promises made during the panchayat elections.
He assured that the State Government would take appropriate steps to resolve challenges confronting the institution.
During the meeting, the Satra Committee raised several concerns, including the reconstruction of the dilapidated Monikut and Sabha Ghar (Namghar).
Sarma assured that necessary measures would be taken to support the restoration efforts.
The Committee also sought the allocation of 1,000 bighas of land in the Char-Chapori area of Darrang district to promote agricultural activity as a sustainable revenue source.
In response, the Chief Minister stated that the State Government would consider the proposal upon formal submission by the local MLA and Deputy Commissioner.
Earlier in the day, the Satra Management Committee hosted a series of traditional cultural performances for the visiting dignitaries, including Krishna Pravesh Nritya from the Ankiya Bhaona tradition, Khuliya Bhauriya Nritya, Thiya Naam, and Bhortal Nritya.
The Chief Minister praised the artistes and thanked the Committee for preserving the rich cultural legacy of the Satra.
Sarma was accompanied by MLA Paramananda Rajbongshi, former MLA Gurujyoti Das, Satra Management Committee President Jadav Chandra Mahanta, Secretary Gangaram Baishya, and other officials.
On his return to Guwahati, the chief minister stopped at the Shahid Stambha in Patharughat and paid homage to the martyrs of the Patharughat uprising.
