DIBRUGARH, March 10: Governor and chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Gulab Chand Kataria, on Sunday emphasised interdisciplinary education as mandated by NEP 2020. He expected that Dibrugarh University would devise curriculums that enable such a process.
While addressing the XXII Convocation of Dibrugarh University at the Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Rangamancha, Kataria congratulated the university for receiving a Rs 100 crore monetary grant. He emphasised the need for its proper utilisation to ensure that the university becomes one of the foremost in India.
He spoke about the relevance of the Indian knowledge system and urged universities to prioritise it. He also urged the university to ensure that students from underprivileged backgrounds, like the tea garden community, are provided free education.
The chancellor also believed that the graduating students would become responsible citizens and contribute to nation-building.
The vice-chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Prof Jiten Hazarika, thanked the central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for granting Dibrugarh University the Rs 100 crore Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU) grant under the Prime Minister- Uchchater Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) Scheme.
He also thanked the state government for granting an additional Rs 100 crore for academic and infrastructural development, especially at a time when the university was implementing the National Education Policy, 2020.
The chief guest of the convocation was Professor Sudhir Kumar Barai, director, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. He emphasised holistic student improvement, highlighting the interconnected nature of physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The total number of graduating students this year was 10,765, including 87 PhD degree holders and 37 Gold medal recipients, among others. The convocation also saw the conferral of honorary degrees, including the DSc Honoris Causa upon Kshiradhar Barua and the DLitt Honoris Causa upon Nawab Imran Shah.
The convocation was attended by approximately 1500 attendees, including vice-chancellors from other state universities, the deputy commissioner, alumni, faculty members, administrative staff, members of the media, and graduating students.
