DIBRUGARH, Nov 11: The door lock and glass tabletop in Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) Mayor Dr Saikat Patra’s office were reportedly damaged by Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukan on Sunday evening, while the Mayor was away in Delhi attending the National Urban Conclave on November 8–9.
Speaking to reporters, Mayor Patra condemned the incident, saying, “Everything should be resolved through dialogue, not violence. DMC is one of the oldest civic bodies in Assam and such actions defame its decades-long legacy.” He added that the dispute may be related to a tender committee formed for the renovation of his old office in which the Deputy Mayor was not included.
Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukan, however, denied the allegations, stating, “I have no separate room in DMC and our discussion in the Mayor’s office was not a big issue. We have many important tasks to focus on.” Sources confirmed that no office is allotted to the Deputy Mayor, as he had vacated his previous room for the DMC Commissioner.
The Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB), established in 1873, was upgraded to Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) in 2024.
