MORIGAON, Oct 8: The conflict between the leaders of two ethnic groups in Central Assam over the historical Pasu Rajas and Satu Rajas has become a serious concern. The controversy started after Ajit Singha Deka of the royal family of the historical five kings of the Tupakuchi kingdom was recently crowned king. The treaty between the Ahom and Tiwa (Lalung) kings appointed seven kings under Rahial Barua and Jagial Gohai. The Ahom kings collected taxes from Katal Ranua and others. After the establishment of democracy, all administrative powers of the king disappeared, but the system was transformed into cultural events and fairs. In these areas, one king after another is traditionally anointed and declared king.
Ajit Singha Deka, a descendant of King Tikendrajit of the Tupakuchi kingdom near Raha, under the kingdom of the five kings and seven kings, was crowned king according to traditional customs. The ceremony was attended by the symbolic kings of Saragaon, Barpujia, Mikirgaon, etc., as well as several central leaders of the Central Assam Koch Rajbanshi Chhatra Sanstha and Koch Rajbanshi Sammilan. The royal family was originally of the Tiwa ethnic group but later adopted the Koch culture.
There has been significant controversy among Tiwa intellectuals after the inauguration ceremony was promoted as a traditional ceremony of the Koch Rajbongshi in Central Assam. Former chief executive member of Tiwa Autonomous Council, Pawan Manta, stated that the Tupakuchi state historically belongs to Tiwa territory. Therefore, such distortion of history will not be accepted under any circumstances. ATSU chief advisor Rimal Amchi called the incident of historical distortion very worrying and urged those involved to refrain from such actions. Pranabjyoti Masrang, president of Morigaon District Tribal Sangha, Devjit Patar, Tiwa youth leader, and other prominent figures from the organisations also attended the protest program.
