DIPHU, Aug 3: On the second leg of the education awareness campaign for quality education, the Executive Member (EM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Education, Richard Tokbi on Thursday visited Longnit High School at Longnit.

Longnit (Govt. Provincialised) High School is the only Assamese high medium school in the area with an enrolment of 221 students with 12 teaching staff. In the last HSLC examination, 42 students appeared out of which only 9 passed. In 2014 the school secured the second position overall in Karbi Anglong in matric results.

The teaching staff told the EM that the children of nearby villages prefer to go to English Medium as the reason for the low performance. Another problem was the children studying in the school residents of far-off villages. The EM was surprised to know about the low performance and suggested the conversion of the school into an English medium one.

Tokbi then visited Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Longnit, a Central government sponsored school under Sarbha Siksha Mission (SSA) for dropout girl students. It is a residential school. Classes are from 6 to 11. This year the school has made a record of cent percent pass result in HSLC examination. Out of 10 students, 3 secured first division and the rest came in the third division.

The EM applauded the teaching staff and students for the result. The teachers have informed the EM about the water scarcity in the school and there is no piped water connection and the only ring well has dried up.

Teachers also said they don’t have staff quarters and stay with students in a building. As it is a residential school the students are also engaged in other activities like weaving, bag making from plastic threads and kitchen gardening. The students also receive self-defence classes.

The EM visited the classrooms, hostel building and weaving, bag-making rooms etc.

At Mohongdijua High School the EM was surprised to see the unused additional classrooms constructed in 2005. The roof, walls and windows have been damaged as it was not used. Electric wirings have been pulled out by miscreants.

This year out of 86 students that appeared, only 31 passed in HSLC examination. The total enrollment of the school is 429. Besides the subject teachers, the school has two vocational teachers in Agriculture and Automotive.

Tokbi also visited Jari Teron LP School, Manja and saw that in a single compound there are LP, ME and High school sections. The lower primary students have to sit in one room which also acts as a stock room for mid-day meal items and as the teacher’s common room.

“After the Class –I students finish their classes by 11 o clock the same room is used for Class V. There are dropout students in lower primary as well the teachers,” informed the EM.

The last visit by the EM was Sister Nivedita Girls High School in Diphu town. In the compound of Sister Nivedita Girls High School, there are Binapani Lower Primary, ME and High School. The schools still don’t have land of their own and are occupying the Railway land. There is uncertainty for the schools as to when the Railways will evict them. In Binapani LP School the enrollment is 144, ME section with 83 and high school with 53. The three sections LP, ME and high school are Bengali medium. The rate of student enrolment has been declining. In the HSLC examination out of 90 appeared only 7 passed and out of which four are in first division, two in second and one in third division.

As the school is occupying Railway land and the education department has a problem providing a school building for them.

With the new education policy of the country, the education department, KAAC, is trying to shift the LP and ME sections to Binapani High School.

In the morning the EM also visited Siloni LP School at Longnit and interacted with the teachers and students.

The EM has sought the cooperation of the teachers in achieving quality education. He also sought suggestions from teachers on the amalgamation process and conversion of some schools into English medium ones for better results.
