Guwahati, March 18: Monday saw a heated confrontation at Gauhati University between the Gauhati University Students’ Union and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), resulting in injuries to several students.
The campus became a hotbed of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), as the students’ union organized a demonstration, overlapping with the ABVP State Students’ Leaders’ Conference at the BKB Auditorium.
The union leader accused the ABVP of mainly hosting outsiders at their conference, devoid of university representation. The clash was said to be an offshoot of the ongoing dissent against the CAA.
The situation intensified as ABVP members tried to enter the university with rallies, met by anti-CAA protesters burning tyres and chanting slogans against the ABVP. The ABVP, however, denied allegations of disorder, stating their conference was conducted systematically with permissions.
They alleged potential disruptions by troublemakers aiming to create chaos on campus and promised to investigate further. The Gauhati University Students’ Union, meanwhile, continued their opposition to the CAA by hoisting black flags, indicating their plan to intensify protests.
