Goalpara Police destroy poppy crops; CM warns peddlers

GUWAHATI, Feb 2: In a major crackdown on illegal drug cultivation, Goalpara Police have destroyed 170 bighas of poppy plantations worth Rs 27.20 crore, strengthening Assam’s tough stance against narcotics, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday.

The Chief Minister took to micro-blogging site X to commend the operation while issuing a strong warning to drug peddlers.

He wrote, “Dear Local Pablo Escobars, sorry to spoil your planned Udta Assam party! Because @Goalpara_Police destroyed 170 Bighas of poppy cultivation in the Char areas worth ₹27.20 crore in January. So next time you think of drugs, think of @assampolice first.”

Meanwhile, Goalpara Police provided further updates on their anti-drug operations, reporting the destruction of another 100 bighas of illegal poppy cultivation at Sitalmari Char under Chunari Police Station.

The drive was led by ASP (HQ) Goalpara and the OC of Lakhipur Police Station, with the Circle Officer of Lakhipur, Excise Inspector, and other officials overseeing the process.

“Continuing with our drive against drug’s, Illegal poppy cultivation on 100 bigha land at Sitalmari Char under Chunari PS have been destroyed by Goalpara Police Team led by ASP(HQ) GLP & OC LPR PS in the presence of CO Lakhipur, Excise Inspector and other officials”, the Goalpara Police stated.
