SIVASAGAR, Sept 11: The year-long golden jubilee celebrations of Sivasagar Amolapatty Primary School began with enthusiasm as hundreds of alumni, students, parents, and local residents gathered at the school campus. The celebration began with a grand cultural procession, one of the longest ever organized by a primary school in the region, which was flagged off by journalist Manoj Kumar Borthakur. Students from ten other primary schools in the town joined in the procession.

The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of flags by Dr Prakash Kotoky, the president of the Celebration Committee, and Manjula Devi, the head mistress of the school. Minu Thakur, the first Mistress of the school in 1972, lit the ceremonial light, and 48 other individuals joined in lighting earthen lamps in memory of deceased teachers and academicians of the town.

The concluding function of the golden jubilee celebrations will be held in September 2024.

At the open meeting, Dr Dilip Baruah, principal of Sibsagar Commerce College, a noted academician, addressed the audience. The meeting was inaugurated by Mohan Chandra Dutta. Other speakers, including Advocate Dilip Baruah, Dr Prakash Kotoky, Arabinda Baruah, and Chandan Rajkhowa, shared their memories and associations with the primary school. They recalled its humble beginnings in a room provided by late Krishna Baruah in his residence before moving to late Kumud Rajkhowa’s residence. The school later got its own building on the present site, thanks to the generous support of philanthropist SR Khemka, who donated rent for the house for 18 years.
