SIVASAGAR, Aug 19: The sudden death of Manjula Devi (53), head teacher of Sivasagar Amolapatty Primary School, a renowned writer, and a respected social worker, on Sunday morning has cast a pall of gloom over the town. Hundreds of her schoolchildren and their guardians admired her. Manjula Devi had to be rushed to Siu-Ka-Pha Hospital following a massive heart attack while teaching on August 14. She was later shifted to AMC Dibrugarh for advanced treatment, where she breathed her on Sunday.
Manjula Devi was instrumental in upgrading Amolapatty Primary School into a premier institution in the district through years of dedicated service, said Arabinda Baruah, president of the School Development Committee. Despite her heart ailments, Manjula Devi worked tirelessly towards the successful completion of the school’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
A prolific writer, Manjula Devi authored several books, stories, and articles for children in various publications. Her latest book, ‘Seujia Dhoroni Seujia Mon’, was in print at the time of her passing. Her last rites were performed at Thanamukh crematorium in the presence of hundreds of her admirers. She is survived by her husband, Ratul Kumar Baruah, a daughter, and a son.
Her death has been widely mourned by Dr Prakash Kotoky, president of the Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee, Hindu Dharma Naamghar Mohila Samaj, Brihattar Sivasagar Press Club, Sivasagar Press Club, Primary School Teachers’ Association, Sadharan Jati Vikash Parishad, Asom Brahman Samaj, Sadou Asom Sanmilita Brahman Sanmilan, Sivasagar Senior Citizens’ Forum, Sivasagar Municipality Tax Payers’ Association, and a host of other organisations.
