Hojai District admin braces for Cyclone Remal, issues precautionary measures

HOJAI, May 27: Hojai district administration is taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of citizens as Cyclone Remal is expected to bring heavy winds and severe rainfall. An order was issued on Monday to prevent potential loss of life and property.

The National Bulletin no 14 (BOB/01/2024) has been issued for the cyclonic storm ‘Remal’, which developed over the east central Bay of Bengal. As Remal moves northwards, heavy winds and significant rainfall are expected in Hojai district and the entire state of Assam.

Recognising the serious nature of the situation, immediate measures are necessary to prevent potential loss of life and property. Therefore, Lachit Kumar Das, ACS, district commissioner, and chairman of DDMA Hojai, under the powers vested upon him by the Disaster Management Act, 2005, has issued the following orders: All department and private boats/vessels operating ferry services within Hojai district are to be suspended from May 27, 2024, to May 28, 2024. This suspension excludes essential services, relief and rescue operations, and boats transporting construction materials and labourers; fishing activities in the river Kopili and Jamuna and its tributaries are prohibited during this period; prohibition of swimming in rivers or water bodies, and agricultural activities like ploughing, cattle grazing, etc., within Hojai district from May 27 to 28, 2024; Caution against touching power lines to avoid electrocution; advisement to avoid water logging areas; directive to take shelter during thunderstorm/lightning activities; in case of any emergency, citizens were advised to call 1077 (toll-free).
