DIBRUGARH, Dec 17: An expert from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) visited Dibrugarh on Tuesday to assess the persistent issue of artificial flooding in the city.
During last monsoon’s flooding crisis, the chief minister had announced that IIT experts would be consulted to devise a permanent solution. Acting on this promise, IIT expert Rajiv Bhattacharya arrived in Dibrugarh on Monday.
Accompanied by a team of engineers from the Public Works Department, Bhattacharya inspected various sections of the Dibrugarh protection drain, which runs through the city.
He reviewed multiple aspects of the problem and assured that a detailed report outlining potential solutions would be submitted within a month.
Meanwhile, the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) initiated the cleaning of the Dibrugarh Town Protection (DTP) drain on December 7, 2024. The first phase involves removing around 30,000 cubic meters of silt and debris from the 5,000-meter-long drain, which averages 1 meter in depth and 6 meters in width. Advanced equipment, such as super suckers, poclains, and barges, is being deployed based on the requirements of each section. The project is expected to be completed by March 2025.
The DTP drain, a critical 9.5-km stormwater drainage system, has been rendered ineffective due to illegal encroachment, garbage dumping, and plastic waste clogging its channels.
