NAGAON, May 31: The Kapili and Borpani rivers in Nagaon district are flowing above the danger mark following the release of additional water from the Kapili Hydro Power Station in Dima Hasao.
The rivers rose nearly one centimetre above the danger level, impacting the Kampur, Kachua, and Raha areas.
The release of water comes in the wake of incessant rainfall over the past week in Dima Hasao and adjoining parts of Meghalaya.
The Hydro Power Station has opened seven sluice gates to manage excess water in the reservoir, leading to flooding concerns downstream.
Overflowing water from the Borpani River has already submerged croplands in over 27 villages under the Kampur and Kachua revenue circles, as per district reports.
In response, the district administration has declared a red alert and urged residents living along the riverbanks to remain vigilant.
The water level in Kampur began rising rapidly early Friday morning, sparking widespread concern among locals.
Severe erosion has also been reported near the Garokhanda rock embankment, prompting fears of a major flood event overnight.
Local village head Rahul Teron used public address systems to warn residents in areas including Garokhanda, Kawoimari, Paschim Kawoimari, Borchung, and Gosaingaon to stay alert and be prepared for possible evacuation.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised people in vulnerable areas to take necessary precautions.
