MARGHERITA, April 1: Khaddi (Sarhul) Festival was celebrated with great fervour and harmony on Tuesday at Powai 3 no Line Sarna Than in Margherita.
It has been organised by Assam Pradesh (Kudukh) Uraon Sangha Powai Regional committee and Powai 3 no Line Kudukh Uraon Society and in assistance with powai residents.
The programme began with Nature God Sarna puja followed by Plantation of saplings, Khaddi (Sarhul) ground inauguration, grand Cultural procession, lighting of earthen lamp followed by a cultural night programme.
The Sarhul festival also known as Khaddi among the Uraon community people is a vibrant spring celebration deeply rooted in nature worship and tribal traditions.
Celebrated mainly in Assam, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chattisgarh and Orissa it marks the tribal new year and the arrival of spring, in the month of Chaitra said Sunil Uraon General Secretary(i/c) of Assam Pradesh Kudukh (Sangha) Powai Regional committee.
Sarhul (Khaddi) is one of the most significant festivals, symbolizing renewal, prosperity and their intimate connection with nature as Sarhul signifies as “Sar” meaning Sal tree and “Hul” means collectively or begin, while Khaddi in the Kudukh language spoken by the Uraon means “flower” said, Sunil Uraon.
Assam Pradesh (Kudukh) Uraon Sangha central executive committee members few days ago met Assam Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal at their office in Guwahati and submited a memorandum to grant ST status, urging to declare state holiday on Sarhul (Khaddi) festival and provide Land pattas to Adivasi community people living in Assam since many centuries.
