Baksa, May 1: At an election rally in Baksa district, Assam, BJP leader and minister Pijush Hazarika showed a sign of respect by stopping his public address when the call to Namaz was heard from a neighbouring mosque.
The instance was recorded and shared by the BJP leader himself, showing Hazarika pausing as the Namaz was recited from a nearby mosque. Baksa is in lower Assam and falls under the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency.
It will undergo polls with three other constituencies – Barpeta, Dhubri, and Guwahati – in the third phase on May 7, completing the voting for all 14 parliamentary seats in Assam. The prior two phases saw voting in 10 seats on April 19 and April 26.
The upcoming elections in these four constituencies are crucial for both the BJP and Congress. The BJP looks to increase its seat count in Assam as part of its wider national goal, while the Congress aims to seize the electoral chance despite internal issues within its state unit.
With a considerable Muslim population in these constituencies, both parties are competing for their support. The BJP is particularly attempting to attract minority voters, even though it faces hurdles in doing so. The split of minority votes between the AIUDF and Congress could potentially favour the BJP in these elections.
