DIPHU, Jan 20: Along with the rest of the state, ‘Gunotsav’, a schools assessment exercise by the government of Assam, is also being conducted across Karbi Anglong district.

On the second day of the Gunotsav programme in Karbi Anglong district on Friday, MLA Bidyasing Engleng visited No 1 Phonglangso LP School at Hemari Tokbi village under Lumbajong Education Block as an external evaluator.

During the visit, the MLA interacted with the students, teachers and members of the School Management Committee (SMC). The MLA also participated in the assembly conducted by the school children. He entered every classroom and asked students to read some passages from their textbooks and to write some spelling.

The school was established in 1986 as an Assamese medium school. In 2021 it was converted into an English medium school, and there are 35 students in the school with two teachers at the moment.

The MLA while interacting with media persons said, “There is a good number of students, but the problem is the condition of the road. The 3 to 4 km stretch from Diphu town to Hemari Bey Village is deplorable. The road is dusty. During the rainy season students, teachers and villagers are finding it difficult to use the road. It needs immediate blacktopping. Another problem facing the school is potable water. A ring well has to be installed. The school playground needs to be improved.”

When asked about the students, the MLA said, “The learning of the children is good. But for achieving better results, roads and communication have to be improved. If the road condition is bad during the rainy season, parents would be able to send their children to school.”

Headmaster Kolomsing Bey also said the most urgent need is a ring well. As there is no ring well water has to be fetched from some houses. A boundary wall is required. In the last Gunotsav the school secured a C grade. This time I expect it to get a higher grade.”

The feeder villages are Hemari Bey, Mensing Ronghang, Mensing Phangcho, Jensing Timung, Khorsing Terang and There Timung.
