NAGAON, June 20: In a startling development, the alleged murder case of a teenage girl from Raha has taken a dramatic turn after the Nagaon Police confirmed that the victim, Panki Das, is in fact alive.
The case had sparked widespread public outrage and emotional reaction across the district.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Nagaon Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Deka informed that Panki Das, a resident of Dighaldari in Raha, had left her home on June 11 following a domestic quarrel.
She reportedly boarded a truck heading to Guwahati with a driver identified as Rahul Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
According to police, she disembarked at ISBT Guwahati and stayed for two days with ISBT employees Nanda Kishore and Dhiraj Kumar.
Both have been arrested following the earlier apprehension of truck driver Rahul Singh.
After leaving their residence, Panki reportedly took shelter at the home of a woman named Pampi Dole in Garchuk Gatanga, Guwahati.
SP Deka stated that Panki Das had been using various mobile phones to contact different individuals while evading her family.
In the meantime, on June 16, a female corpse was recovered from Diphlu, which her family and relatives mistakenly identified as her remains.
However, police suspect the body does not belong to Panki Das or any resident of Nagaon.
DNA tests will be conducted to establish the identity of the deceased.
Five persons have so far been arrested in connection with the case.
Three individuals from Nagaon—Abu Hanif, Amir Hamza, and Azizul Haque—were arrested for allegedly harassing Panki Das.
The two others from Guwahati were detained for failing to inform police despite being aware of the girl’s presence.
SP Deka confirmed that investigations are continuing and DNA tests will be used to verify claims about the corpse found in Diphlu.
The incident, which began as a suspected murder, has now taken a mysterious and complex turn as police work to untangle the sequence of events and identify the deceased.
