GUWAHATI, Oct 22: Indian Railways, in its mission mode, is moving ahead towards becoming the largest ‘Green Railway’ in the world. As part of its target of achieving net zero carbon emissions and 100 percent electrification, Northeast Frontier Railway is accelerating all electrification work on un-electrified Broad-Gauge routes under its jurisdiction. As of now, NF Railway has electrified 2,708.52 RKM (route kilometers), which is 64.00 percent of the total 4,260.52 RKM of the network.
In the eight northeastern states, 1,524.71 RKM have been electrified so far. Of the total electrified routes in the northeastern region, 1,353.231 RKM are in Assam, 2.81 RKM in Manipur, 9.58 RKM in Meghalaya, 6.00 RKM in Nagaland, and 151.59 RKM in Tripura. Additionally, 318.869 RKM in Bihar and 864.94 RKM in West Bengal have been electrified under the jurisdiction of NF Railway.
Electrification work is being carried out in a phased manner by Indian Railway Construction International Limited (IRCON), Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), and NFR/Construction in different sections across the zone.
Electrification will significantly improve train mobility on NFR, strengthen the rail network in the northeastern states, and provide an eco-friendly, faster, and energy-efficient mode of transportation. In addition to reducing pollution, it will decrease dependence on imported crude oil, thereby saving valuable foreign currency. This initiative will also facilitate seamless traffic flow and increase the average speed of trains, resulting in more punctual train operations by eliminating delays due to traction changes.
