NAGAON, Nov 19: The ‘All-Assam Binoy Chandra Bora Memorial Inter-College/University Debate Competition, 2024’ was organised at Nowgong Girls’ College on the theme ‘One Nation, One Election – A Positive Step Towards India’s Economic and Political Outlook’ on Tuesday.
The event commenced with an inaugural speech delivered by the teacher-in-charge, Dr Mitali Goswami, followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and a welcome address by the principal of the college, Dr Kulen Chandra Das. He welcomed the participants from different institutions and reminisced about the contributions of Binoy Chandra Bora and his family to the institution.
Girindra Kumar Baruah chaired the event as the speaker, while Sapunti Bordoloi and Mohini Mohan Deka served as judges.
Participants from various educational institutions, including Nowgong Girls’ College, JB Law College, BKB College, Darrang College, and Gauhati University, took part in the competition. Treasury bench members persuasively elucidated the advantages of ‘one nation, one election’ on the floor of the house. They cited the Manipur insurgency to support their argument, asserting that a unified election process could help resolve such issues and emphasised the high costs of conducting elections at different times of the year. These points sparked numerous counter-arguments from the opposition bench, which argued that while the concept may be feasible for a small country like Belgium, it could be overly idealistic for a vast and diverse nation like India.
Gaurav Kashyap from JB Law College was adjudged the best debater, followed by Sunit Sarma, also from JB Law College, as the second-best debater. The best team award went to JB Law College, while Gauhati University bagged the runners-up position. The winners were presented with trophies, cash prizes, and certificates.
The program concluded with valuable remarks from the speaker and the judges. Ashish Sakia from the department of Geography delivered the vote of thanks.
