DALGAON, May 30: The Orang National Park is spread over an area of 89 sq km in Sonitpur and Darrang districts, and the eviction exercise is being carried out to clear “encroached” land to expand the park. The administration aims to clear 10,000 bighas of encroached land in nine chars, which will be covered by the three-day eviction operation aimed at expanding and clearing the Orang National Park starting Tuesday. The first day of the eviction drive was carried out in four chars, namely Garaimari, Nabochar, Hamuchar, and Dimbuchar, respectively. The administration provided 40 boats for the evicted people to transport their belongings. There are 10,000 bighas of encroached land to be cleared in 9 chars of Darang district to expand the Orang Nation Park.
The 1,200-strong Assam Police and Forest Department personnel have been deployed to carry out the eviction drive,” DFO Darrnag told media persons. A herd of 50 elephants seemed to be roaming in some parts after the eviction. The elephants are roaming freely. The eviction drive was peaceful. While talking to media persons, DFO Pradipta Barua said many encroachers left the land after receiving the notice. However, no media personnel were allowed to cover the eviction.
