GUWAHATI, July 13: Assam Water Resources minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday inspected the embankment along the Brahmajan River in Gohpur constituency, which suffered breaches resulting in widespread flooding in the region.
The embankment, which was constructed by the District Rural Development Authority (DRDA), stretches for 12 kilometers and is flanked by additional embankments built by the Water Resources Department. These combined efforts significantly contributed to flood prevention.
After inspecting the eroded and breached sections of the embankment, Hazarika decided to complete the construction of the remaining 12-14 kilometers of embankment on both sides of the river.
Hazarika also visited the Chatrang River in Gohpur, which has been responsible for recurrent floods, resulting in damages to the local community. He assessed the riparian areas alongside the river and determined that a guard wall will be constructed to fortify the remaining sections of the riverbank.
In addition, the minister inspected the erosion that occurred in the Kukurjan and Dubia areas. The Water Resources Department has initiated temporary preventive measures in this location.
Minister Hazarika said that the government is committed to providing relief to the affected people and taking steps to prevent future floods. He urged the people to cooperate with the government in its efforts to mitigate the effects of flooding.
