KOKRAJHAR, July 14: Pijush Hazarika, the cabinet minister for the Water Resources department in Assam, undertook a visit to the Beki (Bwrsi) River banks and embankments near the Manas National Park in Baksa district. Accompanied by Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), and senior government officials, minister Hazarika reviewed the rising water levels of the river due to the release of water from the Kurichu Dam in neighbouring Bhutan.
The Bhutan government has been releasing water from the Kurichu Dam, which flows downstream into Baksa and Barpeta districts of Lower Assam from the hills of Bhutan. In light of this, minister Hazarika assured that the state government and the BTR government are fully prepared to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of the citizens in the region.
He stated that the state government, along with the government of BTR, is working on a war footing to address the flood situation. Relief camps have been set up to provide shelter and safety to the citizens affected by the floods. CEM Pramod Boro also expressed that the BTR government is taking swift measures to mitigate the flood situation and has established multiple relief camps to ensure the safety of the residents.
During the visit, minister Hazarika and senior government officials inspected the embankments along the Beki (Bwrsi) River at Manas. Immediate reinforcements were instructed to be carried out at vulnerable points along the river bank in Baksa district to prevent river bank erosion.
CEM Pramod Boro highlighted that the BTR government has been proactively taking measures to protect the Beki/Bwrsi river’s banks. This is crucial not only for safeguarding the diverse flora and fauna of the Manas National Park but also for ensuring the safety of downstream villages in Baksa and Chirang districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region.
