JORHAT, Jan 19: Newly-elected Asam Sahitya Sabha president Basanta Kumar Goswami has urged parents to practice the habit of story-telling and poem recitation to their children on a regular basis from an early age so that they are drawn to reading stories and learn the Assamese language.
Goswami stated this while delivering the 14th Srinath Devagoswami Memorial Lecture on the topic ‘Responsibility of the society towards Assamese language after attaining classical language (Drupadi bhasa) status’, held at the Sankardev Kala Krishti Kendra herè on Sunday.
Goswami, a well-known linguist and also a former general secretary of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, said that in order to enable the children to learn the language correctly and to develop interest towards Assamese literature the parents should make a point to start the habit of story-telling and recitation of poems from a tender age.
Urging all to undertake efforts to promote and preserve the Assam language, Goswami said that he has plans to have cordial discussions with the business community to ensure that signboards of shops and business establishments were written in correct Assamese language.
The lecture was organised by the Educational Trust formed in Srinath Devagoswami’s memory, Binita Dutta, a noted educationist and a writer, released a compilation of books written by Srinath Devagoswami titled ‘Sabda Samudra’ at the event in which two teachers – Ratneswar Bharali, a former headmaster of Sankardev Seminary, Jorhat and Lakhimi Buragohain, a retired Jorhat Government Girls’ HS and MP School were felicitated.
Thereafter, three students who secured highest marks in last year’ HSLC examination from three schools in which Late Srinath Devagoswami was associated in its establishment, were awarded scholarships by the Trust.
The students were Pinku Saikia, Sohani Dihingia and Ananya Bora were from Dhekial Higher Secondary School, Deepling Higher Secondary School and Borbheta Public High School, respectively.
Earlier, the programme started with a rendition of a mangalacharan by Pankajyoti Baruah, was anchored by Mousami Mahanta and the vote of thanks was offered by Raja Chakrabarty, also a Convener of the Trust.Â
