During the event, Baruah said that the commitment of Asom Unnati Sabha (AUS) to undertake projects that contribute to the economic advancement of Assamese society. He highlighted the successful implementation of various projects such as banana production, piggery, fishery, and gamosa weaving centers across different locations. However, challenges, particularly from non-Assamese middlemen traders, have adversely affected initiatives like potato cultivation. Baruah stressed the necessity for increased participation in economic activities for the survival and prosperity of the nation.

Dr Utpal Dutta, the president of Sanmilita Sewa, provided insights into the formation of the NGO and its philanthropic endeavours within the town. Sarat Hazarika, general secretary of AUS, underscored the shared objective of AUS and Sanmilita Sewa – fostering economic development and entrepreneurship among the indigenous people of the state. The NGO was established using funds saved from organising Bihu Sanmilan in Boarding Field.

Dr Saumerjyoti Mahanta, principal of Sibsagar Commerce College, emphasised the primary responsibility of developing the economic facets of social life, drawing parallels with the southern states’ successful integration of cultural, linguistic, social, and economic aspects. He highlighted the need for a balance between production and market research, citing concerns that over 57% of technical graduates in India are deemed unemployable by international observers due to a lack of practical application of knowledge.

Dr Prakash Kotoky, former principal of Sibsagar College, Jaysagar, Buddhin Mishra, former principal of Sibasagar Girls’ College, and Dr PP Chetia, a renowned physician, cautioned the NGO leaders about the forthcoming challenges and urged them to operate ethically in their endeavors. The collective efforts of Sanmilita Sewa and AUS aim to contribute significantly to the economic empowerment and overall well-being of the indigenous population in the region.
