SIVASAGAR, Aug 28: Octogenarian Dipali Chaliha, the founder principal of Sibsagar Commerce College, might have forgotten most of her students by now because of her age, but her scores of students would never forget her all their lives. Keeping alive the cherished guru-shishya tradition, a group of alumni from the college thronged Dipali Chaliha’s Phukan Nagar residence here on Sunday morning and felicitated her with heaps of gifts and flower bouquets. The gathering was marked by a cordial exchange of words and anecdotes from their college days, with the alumni bowing their heads in gratitude to receive her blessings.

Dipali Chaliha expressed her joy and excitement, thanking each alumni member, including Bipul Sila Oza, Rajiv Phukan, Snehamoyee Saikia, former vice principal of the college Asna Chetia, Dulal Baruah, Dr. Ratul Sharma, Jiwan Dey, Anamuddin Ahmed, Sheikh Samsher, Dhanadev Mahanta, Utpal Baruah, Kishore Lahiri, Anup Shahu, and Swarup Sila Oza. She remarked that the founders had sacrificed a lot, for which the present-day teachers are now reaping the rewards and earning a lot of money.

Attending the function, senior advocate Ajit Borpujari recollected the days when the college was in its fledgling stage and appreciated Chaliha’s courage and devotion. The alumni members, in their speeches, lauded the disciplinarian principal and recalled how she would continue teaching by candlelight during the evening classes.

Dipali Chaliha is the wife of the former educationist, co-founder of erstwhile Sibsagar College, and MP Rajya Sabha Prag Chaliha, and mother of Kirip Chaliha, former MP.
