SIVASAGAR, June 23: The annual general meeting of Sivasagar Kabi Chakra was held in Oikya Auditorium on Sunday. Addressing the open session presided over by Mukul Nath, critic and writer Ashim Kumar Hazarika said that a modern poet is essentially a part of the socio-cultural milieu and hence a poet’s creation is a reflection of the conflicting trends of thoughts in society. If a poem is not understood even by the critics for its pithy loads of bombastic alliterations in the name of new experimentations, it is useless for writing poems. Plagiarism is still a major problem in Assamese poetry, he cited, giving an example of a poem written on the Manipur situation. Awards, he said, are not the sole parameter to judge a poet.

Dr Manik Saikia released the collection of poems Niribili Swar brought out on the occasion. It is inspiring that a section of today’s youth has taken to writing poems. It indicates that they are serious about the finer feelings of the heart which get reflected in actions in society. In today’s explosion of knowledge, very few care about the deeper levels of genuine human feelings. Ram Swaradeati created a series of Badh Kabyas, which was a genuinely new experimentation in those days.

Earlier, Ashrumoni Dutta Ghosh and Prasanta Borgohain were selected as the president and the secretary of the new committee of the Sivasagar Kabi Chakra in the delegates’ meeting.

Syed Parvij Hussain in his speech said that we are more inclined towards the western world for inspiration, which can no longer quench our thirst. Ujjal Paogam, a noted poet, said that notable poets of the past, including Navakanta Baruah, did not inspire a group of young poets through any forum or organisation as they were individualistic in their attitude.

Dipali Bhattacharjya Barua, Punjan Baruah, Subon Sing Gam, Brajen Phukan, Haren Gogoi, Meghali Hazarika, Bhoirab Munda, Haren Nath, Satyajit Nath, Jamalluddin Ahmed, Muktab Ahmed, Janam Khanikar, Pranjal Pujari, Pranjal Abir Das, Niru Chetia, and Bandana Kousik Bordoloi. Jantumoni Saikia and Chandralekha Hazarika sang songs.
