GUWAHATI, Oct 30: The Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya (MSSV) witnessed a fascinating discussion on the “Role of Bhagavad Gita in Assamese Society” in collaboration with the Svadhyaya Foundation of Guwahati, held at the MSSV auditorium on October 30.
The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the inaugurator and the invited speaker, followed by the soulful rendition of the Mantra and Gita Shloka. Mitali Goswami Trochin, the foundation’s secretary, warmly welcomed the audience, providing insights into the event’s objectives, focusing on the preservation, protection, and development of heritage. Prof. Niranjan Kalita, Head of the Department of Sankaradeva Studies at MSSV, delivered the inaugural address. Among other distinguished guests present were Dr. Ujjwal Maske, Head of the Department of Yogic Science and Naturopathy, Varsha Maske, Ravi Sharma, Rituraj Boruah, and Nazia Akhtar from MSSV.
The keynote speaker, Hemanta Bijoy Mahanta, a retired IRS official and former Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, shared insights from his extensive works on Srimanta Sankaradeva. Highlighting the Bhagavad Gita’s teachings on Karma and Dharma, he emphasized its universal significance transcending temporal and spatial boundaries. Mahanta shed light on Assamese culture, which is deeply influenced by Vaishnavite teachings, underscoring the common practice of Spiritual Sanskara in every household. He referenced the “Krishna Geeta” authored by Govinda Misra in Assamese poetry style, stating its regular recital within the community. The link between the four Yogas mentioned in the Gita, Svadharma, and Karma, as elucidated by Madhavadeva in the verse of Naamghosha, was highlighted as essential knowledge for the new generation’s spiritual journey.
The event drew to a close with a vote of thanks by Dr. Madhan Borah from the Department of Yogic Science and Naturopathy at MSSV, expressing gratitude to all participants and attendees.
The discussion enlightened attendees on the timeless teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and its significant impact on the cultural and spiritual fabric of Assamese society.
