DHUBRI, June 12: In a significant crackdown on misinformation, Dhubri Police have arrested two individuals for allegedly publishing and circulating fake and inflammatory content on social media platforms in relation to the recent violence that occurred in Dhubri town.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Joychan Ali, son of Late Askor Ali, a resident of Dingdinga village under Fakirganj Police Station in South Salmara district, and Johrul Hoque Ahmed, son of Late Taher Ali Ahmed, a resident of Kaldoba Part-I under Agomoni Police Station in Dhubri district.
According to police sources, Joychan Ali was found to have uploaded a fabricated video designed to mislead the public and spread false narratives regarding the communal unrest.
In a similar instance, Johrul Hoque Ahmed allegedly disseminated multiple fake news items through social media, further aggravating communal tensions in the area.
The duo have been charged under various legal provisions for offences related to undermining the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India, as well as for committing deliberate and malicious acts intended to hurt religious sentiments.
A case has been registered at Dhubri Police Station under Case No. 274/2025.
Both accused were produced before the Dhubri Court on Thursday.
Law enforcement authorities have reiterated their resolve to take stringent action against individuals who misuse social media to incite violence and disrupt communal harmony.
The police have also appealed to the public to refrain from sharing unverified information and to depend solely on official channels for accurate updates.
