DIPHU, Dec 9: Two wild adult elephants, a male and a female, were electrocuted at Pukdhekhora under Dokmoka range of east forest division in Karbi Anglong district on the night of Saturday.
The two elephants were part of the herds that entered Pukdekhora from the Doboka Reserve Forest. Farmers had put live electric wires in the paddy field to protect its crops from elephants and wild boars.
The villagers heard the cries of the elephants at the break of dawn. On hearing the news, the executive member (EM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) for tourism and water resources, Ritesh Enghi along with additional principal chief conservator of forests (APCCF), Karbi Anglong, Vinay Gupta and range officer of Dokmoka range, Rajen Rongpi visited the spot to enquire about how the elephants were electrocuted.
The EM told media persons that chief executive member (CEM), KAAC Tuliram Ronghang has been informed about the incident. The forest officials have also been directed to conduct an investigation.
APCCF Gupta said, “An electric fencing was put in the paddy field to prevent wild elephants from entering it. The elephants had died due to electrocution. Putting electric fencing in paddy fields is illegal which may even electrocute a man. An FIR has been lodged and police will take action.”
The actual cause of death will be determined after the postmortem report.
