SHILLONG, May 16: Meghalaya Governor SP Malik on Monday appointed Dr Lajja Ram Bishnoi as the new DGP of Meghalaya.
He is currently the special director of training and armed forces, Assam.
Bishnoi from the 1991 batch of Assam-Meghalaya cadre was in the list of three empanelled officers approved by the UPSC in its meeting held on February 9 this year.
The state government had sent five names.
Besides Bishnoi, Mukesh Agrawal and KV Singh Deo, both belonging to the 1989 batch, were also shortlisted by the UPSC out of the five names sent by Meghalaya Government after the retirement of R Chandranathan on December 21, 2021.
The other two officers are S. Narayan Singh (1991 batch) and Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch). Nongrang is the current special DGP.
The new Meghalaya DGP will get less than a year in the state as he will be retiring in March next.
Notably, Meghalaya Government December 23, last year had promoted the first Khasi lady IPS officer and additional director general of police (SB) Idashisha Nongrang to the rank of special director general of police, of Meghalaya Police.
