GUWAHATI, Sept 20: The state Tourism minister of Meghalaya, Paul Lyngdoh, attended a send-off program for participants of the trek leaders training program on Tuesday. He encouraged the first batch of participants to stay focused during their training and return to the state enriched with knowledge. The event was also attended by CVD Diengdoh IAS, director of the department of Tourism, government of Meghalaya.
Minister Paul Lyngdoh emphasised the significance of adventure tourism in Meghalaya and mentioned that 25 trails had been mapped and identified. He expressed hope that more trails would be identified in the coming years. Many of these trails are connected with local history and folklore. The government has invested time and resources in preparing for the participants’ trip, and he urged them to use their time wisely and return enriched.
The trek leaders training program is conducted by Trek the Himalayas, an agency empanelled by Meghalayan Age Limited (MAL) for identifying multi-day trekking and hiking trails in Meghalaya. Trek the Himalayas is a certified member of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), and their expeditions cover over 100 peaks across the Himalayas.
The project’s objectives include preparing a detailed master plan for setting up trekking and hiking activities, identifying 25 multi-day trails, creating a user-friendly booklet and app for tourists, and providing experiential training for local resources.
The first batch of training is scheduled for September 20 to 30, 2023, with 30 participants in Darjeeling. The second and third batches, comprising 60 participants, will take place from September 27 to October 6, 2023, in Uttarakhand and Darjeeling. The fourth batch, with 30 participants, will be from October 3 to October 12, 2023.
Participants from various villages in Meghalaya are taking part in the training, and they departed from Shillong to Guwahati Railway Station on the evening of September 19, 2023. A team briefing was held on September 15, 2023, at Shillong Club, where Rakesh Pant, the founder of Trek the Himalayas, briefed the participants through video conference. Gregory Warjri, a local coordinator and founder of Nomads, also attended the session.
