Gangtok, May 20: In an effort to reduce the risk of landslides during the upcoming monsoon season, the Gangtok district administration has implemented a ban on new earth excavation activities. District Collector Tushar G. Nikhare announced the directive, effective from June 1 to September 30, under Section 30 of the Disaster Management Act 2005.
This measure is aimed at addressing the increased vulnerability to landslides caused by monsoon rains and hill-cutting practices.
Nikhare, serving as the chairman of the district disaster management authority, emphasized that no new excavation projects will be allowed during this period in Gangtok. This decision is part of a comprehensive strategy to protect the region, which is highly susceptible to landslides due to its hilly terrain and the impact of human activities like construction and hill cutting. Historical data indicate that Sikkim, with its rugged landscape, frequently faces severe landslide challenges, especially during heavy monsoon rains.
The directive, however, permits activities related to protection, restoration, and maintenance to continue during the ban. The official order stated, “There shall be no new earth excavation works in the district during the monsoon period from 1st June 2024 till 30th September 2024.” It further clarified, “Only works related to protection, restoration and maintenance shall be permitted during this period.”
This preventive measure underscores the district administration’s proactive approach to disaster management and its commitment to safeguarding the community from monsoon-induced hazards.
