GUWAHATI, Sept 20: The Office of District Mission Coordinator, SSA, North Garo Hills (NGH) organised a program on World Literacy Day to commemorate the global celebration of literacy, which took place on September 8, the date fixed by UNESCO for observing World Literacy Day. The program was held at the Mendipathar Multipurpose Society Hall in Resubelpara.
Aldo A Sangma, nominated MDC, GHADC, graced the occasion as the chief guest and emphasised the importance of literacy for individual and societal development in his speech. Sangma highlighted that literacy is a crucial step toward education and stressed that every child should have access to quality education. Quality education empowers children to unlock their dreams and reach their full potential, he added.
The observation of World Literacy Day serves as a reminder to renew the commitment to ensure that no child is left behind in the field of education, Sangma further stated.
Nippon Hajong, additional deputy commissioner, NGH, addressed the gathering as the guest of honour and discussed the government’s education schemes aimed at encouraging compulsory and quality education for children. He emphasised the importance of active coordination among all stakeholders to address the issue of out-of-school children (OoSC) and highlighted the need to redress the dropout rates among children.
It was revealed that the district had recorded 155 school dropouts for the year 2022-2023, and efforts were underway to enroll these children in special training centres.
Samar Dey, DSEO, provided an introductory address in which he elaborated on the importance of the program and highlighted the activities of the DMC in spreading literacy across the district.
During the program, awards were presented to the best-performing Cluster Resource Centres under Resubelpara Block, Bajengdoba Block, and Kharkutta Block, and the distribution of Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) also took place concurrently.
