PSO drowns in Brahmaputra river, Assam Police mourns demise

Dhubri, Jan 8: In a tragic event, an Assam police officer, Kushal Kalita, drowned in a river in South-Salmara Mankachar district on Sunday. Kalita served as the Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Chandra Kumar Kalita, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of South-Salmara Mankachar.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning during an inspection of the Bandihana Police Outpost by the SP and DSP of the South Salmara Police, accompanied by PSO Kushal Kalita. Kalita slipped off the boat and drowned in the Brahmaputra river while crossing from Fakirganj to Bandihana.

Following the incident, a rescue operation was initiated by the police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to locate the missing officer. Kalita’s body was later recovered after extensive search operations.

His last rites were performed at his native village in Mankachar on Monday. Assam Police, along with DGP GP Singh, mourned Kalita’s demise and pledged to continue efforts to improve safety standards. Singh expressed the department’s condolences and support for Kalita’s family in a message on platform X.
