MARGHERITA, Oct 16: A tragic incident unfolded in Margherita co-district when the body of a five-year-old boy, identified as Abhimanyu Chakraborty, was discovered in the Buridehing river, Margherita, on Monday.
Abhimanyu Chakraborty, a resident of 1 Number Lazum, Ward Number 4 of Margherita, had gone missing on October 11 during the Ashtami Durga Puja celebrations.
In response to the heartbreaking discovery on Tuesday, over 500 locals of Margherita gathered for a candle march, which began from Abhimanyu Chakraborty’s residence and culminated at the Margherita Police Station, where participants demanded capital punishment for those responsible for the crime.
Pratap Gogoi, the officer in-charge of Margherita Police Station, while addressing the crowd, urged them to maintain faith in the police’s efforts and assured that the authorities are committed to apprehending the culprits swiftly.
Local residents and neighbours of the deceased said it is very unfortunate that, six days after the horrific incident, the Margherita police and Margherita co-district commissioner have failed to apprehend the main culprit, while in other towns and cities across our country, culprits are apprehended within 24 hours. This indicates that the Margherita police are idle, irresponsible, and incapable in fulfilling their duty.
Local residents said it was a premeditated murder of Abhimanyu Chakraborty, and the main culprit is a known person.
It may be mentioned that, due to illegal activities such as drug abuse, consumption of liquor, gambling, burglary, and dacoity, the crime graph has increased rampantly across many areas under Margherita co-district. However, the Margherita police and Margherita co-district authorities have never taken stringent action to control it.
