GUWAHATI, Oct 17: On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted a significant achievement in the state’s fight against poverty, a press release said on Thursday.
Sharing a post on the micro-blogging site X, Sarma revealed that over 80 lakh people have been lifted out of multi-dimensional poverty in recent years, demonstrating the impact of the state government’s welfare initiatives.
Taking to the micro-blogging site X, Sarma stated, “In the last few years, over 80 lakh people have escaped multi-dimensional poverty in Assam; a testament to our efforts to fight poverty.”
The Chief Minister also credited a range of policies for this progress, including the Orunodoi scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance to economically vulnerable families, and various measures like free foodgrains, subsidised medicines, free healthcare, and housing with water connections.
Additionally, these comprehensive efforts have been instrumental in improving the living conditions of Assam’s citizens.
The data accompanying the Chief Minister’s message showcased a marked reduction in multi-dimensional poverty across districts of Assam between 2015-2016 and 2019-2021.
Meanwhile, the largest declines were seen in districts like Goalpara (40.15% to 18.34%), Karbi Anglong (37.59% to 16.20%), and Dibrugarh (28.97% to 12.26%).
“A comprehensive net of policies – Orunodoi (monthly financial assistance), free foodgrains, free treatment, subsidised medicines, a home with water connection among others are being offered to citizens to improve their living conditions”, Sarma added.
