Upper Siang district launches awareness campaign on POCSO and Child Rights

YINGKIONG, Sept 8: In line with the recommendation of the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (APSCPCR), the District Administration of Upper Siang has launched a series of sensitization and awareness programmes on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and child rights, an official statement said.

The campaign aims to promote awareness and ensure strict implementation of child protection laws across educational institutions, government offices, commercial establishments, and administrative outposts in the district.

The initiative was formally launched with a programme organized at the Conference Hall of the DC Office, Yingkiong, which brought together government officers and staff to deliberate on child safety and legal provisions.

The programme is being conducted under the supervision of Smti Ine Pertin, Deputy Director (ICDS), Department of Women and Child Development, Upper Siang. Addressing the participants, Advocate Omem Apang, Para Legal Counsellor at the One Stop Centre (OSC), Upper Siang, delivered a detailed session on the POCSO Act, 2012.

He emphasised the importance of preventing and reporting cases of sexual offences against children and outlined the procedures for intervention and support.

Advocate Akoying Tekseng, Legal cum Probation Officer at the District Child Protection Unit, Upper Siang, provided insights into child rights and the legal framework designed to protect children from abuse, exploitation, and neglect.

He sensitised the participants on their role in identifying and addressing child protection concerns and ensuring that legal provisions are implemented effectively.

According to the official statement, this initiative is part of a broader effort to foster a child-friendly environment and ensure that the rights and safety of children are upheld in all sectors of society.

Similar awareness sessions on POCSO and child rights are scheduled to be conducted across Upper Siang in schools, commercial spaces, government offices, and administrative units.

The objective of the campaign is to sensitize communities, encourage responsible reporting, and promote adherence to child protection laws.

Officials participating in the programme reiterated the district’s commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and rights of children by creating awareness, empowering caregivers and officials, and enforcing legal safeguards.

The administration further assured that this sustained effort will be key in building a secure and supportive environment for children and that all stakeholders will be encouraged to actively participate in preventing abuse and promoting the welfare of children in Upper Siang.
