Aaranyak participates in workshop on SLM and CBPP in Nagaon

GUWAHATI, Aug 19: A team of 10 researchers from Aaranyak participated in the recently concluded district-level workshop on ‘Seasonal Livelihood Mapping (SLM) and Community-Based Participatory Planning (CBPP)’ held at the conference hall of the Zila Parishad, Nagaon district recently. The workshop was jointly organised by the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP) and the Department of Agriculture, government of Assam, with support from the Nagaon district administration. It was part of the project ‘Enhancing Climate Adaptation of Vulnerable Communities through Nature-based Solutions and Gender-Transformative Approaches in Assam, India’ (ENACT-Assam), implemented by the WFP and the Agriculture Department, government of Assam.

Aaranyak, a premier environmental NGO in the country, has been selected as the local agency to carry out the preliminary field studies for this project in selected villages of Nagaon district. These villages are located in three development blocks of Nagaon district: Kathiatoli, Pakhimoria, and Roha. The Aaranyak team, led by Dr Partha Jyoti Das, head of the Water, Climate, and Hazard Division, included Hemanta Phukon, Kakali Sarma, Dharani Saikia, Ranjita Chetry, Arundhati Das, Pulin Saikia, Swagot Buragohain, Mriganka Shekhar Baruah, and Disha Haloi.

The goal of the ENACT-Assam project is to mitigate disaster risk, enhance preparedness, foster climate adaptation, and improve climate resilience in the agriculture sector of the state, particularly among vulnerable livelihood groups such as farmers, fishers, livestock raisers, and other vocational groups affected by climatic, socioeconomic, environmental, or disaster-related risks.

The project has been designed to achieve three major outcomes: Improved capacities for climate adaptation at the community level; promotion of sustainable farming practices, gender-transformative and diversified rural livelihoods; promotion of resilient food systems and the creation of institutional mechanisms.

The Aaranyak team will carry out the Seasonal Livelihood Mapping (SLM) and Community-Based Participatory Planning (CBPP) exercises in seventeen villages in Nagaon district. These methodologies aim to promote a bottom-up planning approach at the community level, facilitating the participation of communities in development planning by giving due priority to their views and choices.

Narendra Kr Shah, IAS, district commissioner, and Gunajeet Kashyap, ACS, district development commissioner, Nagaon, attended the workshop as invited guests. They interacted with the participants on a range of issues relevant to agriculture, climate change, and the food security scenario in the district, and apprised the audience of various schemes being implemented in the rural livelihood sector.

The technical sessions of the workshop were moderated by scientists from the WFP, while the rapporteuring was done by the Aaranyak project team.
