SIVASAGAR, Jan 13: Asom Chah Majdur Sangha (ACMS) Rajabari unit and Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) are intensifying their democratic stir against Danis Kukurasuwa, who leased Desang Rajabari TE from Assam Tea Corporation in April 2023. Allegedly, Kukurasuwa has not paid wages and salaries to labourers, workers, and employees for the past four months, plunging them into a severe crisis.
The agitationists, supported by ACMS leaders from Moran, including Lakheswar Tanti, conducted a 36-hour demonstration on Jan 8 and Jan 9. Despite support from ACMS leaders and meetings with district Labour Department officials, the issue remains unresolved.
On Thursday, led by Rajkishore Bumij, president of ATTSA, Sivasagar district, along with Phunu Tanti and Rabin Tanti, presidents of ACMS, Rajabari unit, and Santanu Majhi, president of ATTSA, Rajabari, the protesters marched from Fuleswari School Field to the DC Office. They submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the district commissioner, Sivasagar, received by district circle officer Samujjal Baruah.
The leaders warned the garden authority and the state government to clear the pending dues before Magh Bihu, threatening further steps if not addressed promptly. Rajkishore Bhumij informed that the state government has directed workers’ leaders to submit details of the arrear dues at the earliest.
