DIBRUGARH, July 18: The anemia among students at Namsang Tea Estate Model School in Dibrugarh has improved after slight modifications were made to the mid day meal diet. Expert advice from nutritionists has significantly improved the anemia of students who were found to be anemic after a health test.
“Two years ago, under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), a health camp was organised at our school, and we found low levels of hemoglobin among 76 girl students. We sought expert advice from nutritionists and made slight modifications to the mid day meal,” said Debajit Ghosh, headmaster of Namsang Tea Estate Model School.
He explained, “We added iron-rich foods and provided folic acid tablets to all students weekly, with additional provisions for those with hemoglobin levels below 5. After two years of continuous intervention and yearly health checks under RBSK, the outcome is quite satisfactory.”
“Currently, only four students have hemoglobin levels below 10, while 357 students have hemoglobin levels above 10, which is crucial for a healthy school environment,” Ghosh added.
Ghosh expressed optimism, stating, “Now we can say that the students will live healthier lives, which will motivate them to pursue education and participate in various physical activities without any complications.”
Ghosh has been taking all possible measures to improve the health condition of the students at his school.
The Namsang TE Model School was established in 2022 for the children of tea garden workers. The school has six teachers.
Ghosh set an example by tackling high anemia rates among his students in 2024 with slight modifications to the Mid Day Meal scheme, following expert advice from nutritionists.
