GUWAHATI, July 12: The flood situation in Assam remains critical as more than 58,000 people continue to bear the brunt of the calamity across seven districts and sub-divisions.
According to the latest bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Biswanath, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, and Tamulpur are facing the impact of the floods.
Lakhimpur district is the most severely affected, with around 25,752 people grappling with the floodwaters. Additionally, 15,870 people in Halem, Biswanath, and 13,247 people in Chirang are also reeling from the floods. The deluge has submerged 715.06 hectares of agricultural land in the affected areas.
The floodwaters have led to the inundation of 133 villages, exacerbating the challenges faced by the affected population. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains to continue for at least another day, indicating that the situation may worsen in some areas.
The Disang river in Nanglamuraghat is flowing above the danger level and is expected to rise further during the night, as per the ASDMA’s evening bulletin. Several other Central Water Commission (CWC) stations have reported water levels in rivers exceeding warning levels.
Reports of damages to embankments and other infrastructure have emerged from Dhemaji, Dhubri, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Bajali, Tamulpur, and Udalguri. Erosion has also been observed in Charaideo, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Tamulpur, and a landslide was reported in Karimganj.
The IMD has issued a warning of very heavy rainfall over Sikkim and districts including Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Udalguri, and Darrang for at least another day. Consequently, a rise in water levels is expected in the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries such as Puthimari, Aie, Beki, Manas, Pagladiya, Kopili, and other smaller tributaries situated in these districts.
The death toll in the first wave of floods this year stands at seven, with no new fatalities reported. The authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the affected population, but the challenging weather conditions continue to pose significant difficulties.
