Hatsingimari, Feb 5: A government officer, Emtaz Mondal, was caught and arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption while accepting a bribe in Hatsingimari, Assam on Monday.
Mondal, reportedly an Extension Officer of the Fishery Department in Dhubri and also the Incharge Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad, South Salmara-cum-Incharge Block Development Officer, Fekamari Block of South Salmara, had allegedly demanded Rs. 10,000 as bribe from a complainant for bill payments related to Jal Jeevan Mission works.
Later, Mondal reduced the bribe amount to Rs. 8,000. The complainant reported the matter to the Directorate resulting in a trap being set at the office of the Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad, South Salmara, Mankachar, Hatsingimari.
Mondal was caught red-handed accepting the bribe in his office. The bribe money was recovered and seized in the presence of independent witnesses. A case was registered against Mondal under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) at the ACB Police Station on 05/02/2024 (Case No. 12/2024). Mondal has been arrested and further legal proceedings are ongoing.
