Guwahati, Feb 24: A major stolen mobile phone racket was busted in Guwahati on Saturday, with one arrest made, officials have confirmed.
The arrested individual is a businessman, Bhabesh Sharma, apprehended during a raid at Shree Vinayak Enclave Apartment, Athgaon locality.
This operation was initiated on information that stolen phones from across the country were being smuggled to Bangladesh. Sharma is believed to be a key player in this criminal operation. Reports suggest a similar racket in Delhi and involvement of several high-profile businessmen, details of which are with the police.
The smuggling predominantly occurs through courier services, accompanied by hawala transactions worth lakhs. In the raid, 185 stolen mobile phones were recovered from courier service provider Naval Sahani.
A case, numbered 26/2024, has been registered with Paltanbazar Police, with the crime branch of Guwahati Police leading the investigation under senior officials. More details are expected to be released soon.
