Guwahati, Feb 19: The Guwahati Traffic Police announced on Monday that sections of MG Road at Bhoothnath and Machkhowa will be blocked due to ongoing construction of a new flyover by the Public Works Department (PWD).
The flyover is set to be inaugurated by the end of the month. To facilitate construction, traffic restrictions and diversions will be implemented, potentially leading to congestion. These measures will come into effect from tonight.
Commuters are advised to seek alternate routes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for Assam’s first six-lane extradosed bridge over the Brahmaputra in February 2019.
This bridge connects Guwahati and North Guwahati. A six-lane road is being constructed from the bridge’s termination point in North Guwahati to the National Highway in Gauripur, Kamrup district.
PWD officials anticipate that travel time between Guwahati and Gauripur will reduce to 10 minutes once the bridge is operational. The bridge is also expected to ease traffic congestion in areas like Jalukbari, Maligaon, and Adabari. Not only Guwahati but the whole of north Assam will benefit from this bridge, according to sources.
