Assam: North Lakhimpur College principal suspended

GUWAHATI, Aug 26: Upper Assam’s prestigious higher educational institution, the North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous)’s principal Dr Biman Chandra Chetia was suspended on Friday for his alleged immoral act by the Assam government’s higher education department.

In an order issued on August 26, Assam government’s director, Director of Higher Education, Dharma Kanta Mili said, “The government of Assam, higher Education Department is requested to instruct this Directorate to place Dr Biman Chandra Chetia, Principal of North Lakhimpur College under suspension for conducting free and fair investigation on the matter in regards to news item published in social media regarding Dr Biman Ch Chetia, principal of the college and Ranjan Kr Bora be appointed as principal in-charge and DDO of the college till the matter of Dr Chetia is resolved.”

Notably, North Lakhimpur College principal Dr Biman Ch Chetia has been engulfed in a controversy over the last couple of days. Recently, Dr Chetia’s nude online chatting through WhatsApp with a mysterious girl got leaked and apparently went viral all over social media. Consequently, it sparked the conscious natives of the state. Expressing concern over the contention, the Lakhimpur district units of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, All Assam Students’ Union, and the students’ community of the North Lakhimpur College staged protest demonstrations on Thursday in different corners of the town. The students’ body demanded immediate arrest and termination of Dr Biman Ch Chetia.

Following the protest and tension prevailing in the North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) premises till Thursday evening, the Lakhimpur district administration placed a huge number of police personnel and other paramilitary forces at the college premises.

Accordingly, the Governing Body of the North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) also held an urgent meeting on August 25, last the issue and requested the Director, Higher education, Assam to take necessary action against Dr Biman Ch Chetia.
