GUWAHATI, Oct 14: Through various initiatives and policies, Assam has made significant strides towards reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development to combat climate change, in view of Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.
In a post on the micro-blogging site X, the Chief Minister emphasized the state’s proactive measures, asserting that Assam is ensuring its carbon footprint remains minimal through the implementation of several climate-focused schemes.
Sarma wrote, “Assam is taking giant strides towards climate action and ensuring the State’s carbon footprint is minimal.”
Meanwhile, to address its vulnerability to climate challenges such as floods and droughts, Assam has introduced several key policies, including: Seuj Axom Abhijan (2022), Renewable Energy Policy (2022), Assam State Action Plan on Climate Change (2021-2030), Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy (2021), Exemption from Electricity Duty on Green Energy, and Assam State Disaster Management Plan (2022).
Solar power has also been a significant contributor, with the state harnessing 87% of its grid-interactive renewable energy from solar projects.
The Chief Minister further informed that Assam has made remarkable progress in expanding its renewable energy capacity. In 2019, only 9.63% of the state’s total energy came from renewable sources.
Additionally, by 2022, this figure rose to 14.91%, with projections indicating that by 2030, over 74% of the state’s energy capacity will be from renewable sources.
