Guwahati, Oct 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant reduction in the state’s crime rates over the past five years on Wednesday.
He expressed his satisfaction on ‘X’, stating, “Our commitment to make Assam a crime-free State is moving positively in the right direction. Sharing an update on the decreasing trend of all major kind of crimes recorded in the State.”
The data reveals that murder cases dropped to 686 in 2023 from 1235 in 2019, and rape cases fell to 656 in 2023 from 1952 in 2019.
Dacoity cases also decreased to 55 in 2023 from 198 in 2019. However, the 2023 data only covers up to August, unlike the full-year data for the previous years, which may impact the comparison.
CM Sarma attributes the crime rate decrease to factors such as proactive police patrolling, improved crime management, use of forensic techniques, community-law enforcement cooperation, and the state government’s support in implementing stringent anti-crime policies.
