SIVASAGAR, June 28: A workshop on orchids was conducted at Sibsagar College (Autonomous) which was organised by the renowned NGO Sanmilita Sewa in collaboration with the college. Lakshyajit Gogoi, a prominent orchid specialist and known as the ‘Orchid man of Assam’, interacted with the students and emphasised that our students have comparatively less knowledge about orchids compared to students from other states who have not witnessed orchids at all. Gogoi expressed his belief that Assam has the potential to build a fortune solely on orchids, similar to how Bangalore and Hyderabad have flourished in the field of software development.
Gogoi highlighted that out of the 3500 orchid species, a significant number are found in the humid atmosphere of Assam and the north-eastern region. Among the districts, Karbi Anglong holds the richest collection of orchids. Gogoi further said that orchids possess immense medicinal value in addition to their aesthetic appeal.
The workshop witnessed the presence of various dignitaries, including Manoj Bhagawati, secretary of Sivasagar Sports Association, Dr Utpal Dutta, associate professor at Sibsagar College, Ananga Mohan Sarma, social worker, Sarat Hazarika, secretary of Sanmilita Sewa, Pradip Khandelia, and several other esteemed individuals. The event aimed to enhance awareness and knowledge about orchids among the participants, highlighting the significant potential Assam holds in this domain.
