GUWAHATI, Dec 6: The Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah has said that that his party will try to unite all regional forces prior to the state’s 2026 assembly election.
He added that Rahul Gandhi, Lok Sabha’s leader of the opposition (LoP), has approved of stitching alliance with all opposition parties in the state.
Borah was at the national capital on Friday to meet top Congress leaders and also submitted a report to the leadership about the recent debacle in the state by-election.
He said, “I have submitted a detailed report on why we lost the polls in Assam. In addition, I spoke with Rahul Gandhi and other top party leaders. In order to challenge the BJP in the upcoming assembly election, I was advised to push for a larger opposition coalition in Assam.”
“Gandhi has also advised me to work for uniting all regional parties in Assam, and Congress has always supported opposition unity,” Borah said.
Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi, the Sivasagar MLA earlier said that an alliance with the Congress party can be formed only on a condition that the seat-sharing pact must be sealed much before the polls.
“Congress must decide on how many seats they want to fight in the polls. They keep these things pending till the election dates are announced and at the last moment they give their candidates in most of the seats,” he said.
According to Gogoi, to oust the BJP from power, all opposition parties including Congress must fight unitedly. “This is the only way to defeat the ruling party in the next assembly polls,” Gogoi stated.
The Sivasagar legislator also warned that the Congress party would put up a poor show if they decided to contest the assembly polls alone.
“In the 2021 assembly election, Congress got 26 seats but if they contest polls alone, they will hardly win 6 seats in the next polls,” he said.
Congress drew a blank in the recent bypolls despite contesting in all five seats.
The opposition party lost its bastion in the Samaguri assembly constituency as Congress heavyweight and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain’s son Tanzil Hussain conceded defeat to BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah.
