CPI demands 4 p.c. property tax on 200 billionaires to roll back privatisation policy

SIVASAGAR, Feb 20: CPI Sivasagar district council cadres on Thursday registered their protest against the alleged “anti people” budget tabled in the Parliament for 2025-26.

In the protest rally, CPI State Secretary Kanak Gogoi, District Secretary Mani Buragohain and Workers’ Leader Madan Barua explained the reason of having been forced to take to the street again against the BJP led government.

Their demands include: (1) 4 per cent wealth tax and corporate tax increase on the country’s 200 billionaires (in dollars), (2) legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers’ produce and withdrawal of draft National Agricultural Marketing Policy, (3)  Stop privatization of public assets through national monetization of pipelines and withdrawal of 100 per cent Foreign Direct Investment in  insurance sector, (4) 50 p.c. increase in allocation for MNREGA,(5) introduction of Urban Employment Guarantee Act, increase in funding for old age pensions and other social security benefits.

They have also demanded 3 p.c. of GDP allocation for health and 6 p.c. of GDP for education, increase in food subsidies to strengthen public distribution system, substantial increase in allocation for women and child development for SCs and STs, increase in expenditure for Integrated Child Development Scheme and repeal of cess and additional taxes on petroleum products not shared with the states. The meeting was also addressed by veteran CPI leader Dharma Barua, Ajay Bora and Anuradha Gohain Gogoi.
