MARGHERITA, Nov 2: Tension gripped Nizmakum Village, Makumkilla under the 83 number Margherita Constituency in Tinsukia district on Thursday morning as an elderly man was tragically trampled to death by a wild pachyderm.
The incident occurred when a massive wild elephant, in search of food, arrived at Nizmakum Village, Margherita. The elephant fatally trampled 75-year-old Dadu Purti in front of his residence, leaving the entire area in shock and distress.
Local residents in the area expressed their anguish, citing regular disturbances caused by wild elephants due to widespread deforestation. The intrusion of these animals near villages has caused sleepless nights and raised concerns among the villagers.
Responding to the distress call, personnel from the Margherita West Range Forest Department swiftly arrived at the location, recovering the deceased man’s body. At the time of reporting, the body has been transported to Tinsukia Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Further investigations into the incident are currently underway.
